CLAYDON, Edward

No.122278, Gunner, Edward CLAYDON
Aged 23

307th Brigade, Royal Field Artillery
Died of his Wounds (gas) on Wednesday, 14th November 1917

Edward Claydon was born in Dullingham on 19th September 1893, (Newmarket Q4 1893 3B:502), baptised 5th August 1894 in Dullingham, son of Edward Charles and Eliza Mary CLAYDON (née BROWN).
There is an element of doubt over these dates as some transcription errors seem to have been made, ie some are in the wrong date order.

1901 census...Aged 6,he was at Work House, Brinkley Road, Dullingham with his father Edward CLAYDON [37] bricklayer's labourer born Woodditton; his mother Eliza [36]; brothers Charles [14], Horace [9] and Arthur [1] and sisters Mary [5] and Ivy [3]. Except for his father, all were born in Dullingham.

1911 census...Aged 17, a farm labourer,he was still in Brinkley Road, Dullingham with his parents (father now a road minder); sister May and sister Ida [7] born Dullingham and brother Jack [5] born Dullingham.
His mother had borne 12 children but sadly 4 had already died.

His elder brother Horace (awarded Military Medal) had died in Belgium just 11 days earlier. see here

Where he enlisted in uncertain, but "Soldiers Died" have him enlisting in Grays, Essex, but they also have him as born in Tilbury.

Neither his Army records, nor any award of a Silver War Badge have been found. Consequently there is no way of establishing where or when Edward was gassed.

The burial notes include " date of death Nov 14 died at Sutton Coldfield as result of gas poisoning in France."
One has to be careful not to confuse this Edward Claydon with Edward Amos Claydon of Stetchworth who also fell.

Edward Claydon is buried in Dullingham (St Mary's) Churchyard, west of the church.
